Southampton

Southampton is a standard port so tidal predictions are given for each day of the year and these can be found in the current year’s Nautical Almanac. The port offers good shelter in most winds and allows sailing for the experienced in nearly all conditions..

There are two rivers. River Hamble on Starboard at the mouth of Southampton water and further up also to starboard the River Itchen.

On entering the River Hamble there are four well known sailing clubs Warsash, Hamble River Sailing Club, Royal Southern Yacht Club and the Royal Air Force Yacht Club

Southampton has five Super Port Marinas with facilities for yachts of up to 20 metres or more.

Temporary Anchoring is possible by club moorings Netley, Hythe, Weston and Marchwood all about 2 metres deep. It is recommended to obtain permission in advance, and keep well clear of the main shipping channels.

This marina is at the mouth of the Hamble river and has easy access to the Solent for a quick crossing to Cowes, or to the east there is Chichester, and of course the famous naval dockyard of Portsmouth.. If you go west there is Beaulieu River and Lymington all lovely sailing areas with plenty of refreshment spots to call at. Visitors' berths are usually available, but be sure to book.

Port Hamble Marina VHF80 Marina Office 0203 8045 2741

Hamble Yacht Services, which specialised in the preparation of racing yachts has been taken over by Ancasta. The lovely part about this marina is that it is an easy walk to Hamble village with its cafes and pubs. Also for those who do not want to wander too far, there is a Pub on site.

Mercury Yacht Harbour VHF80 Marina Office 0203 8045 2464

Further up the river, still on the port side, this harbour is a little further away from everything but does have its own pub and restaurant. All the services are there and you will normally be very welcome in the RAF club which is next door.

Swanwick Marina VHF80 Marina Office 01489 885000

Was known to the locals as Moody's yard and boats that have been built there for many years. Now taken over by Premier Marinas who now supply the Moody and Elan Yachts. This is a good yard with many yacht building services on site but going up the river can be a little difficult and the draft is only 2.5 meters at low tide. There is the reward of the Jolly Sailor pub for those who make the trip.
